GasexIn a low wind stress environment and to elucidate the factors controlling the flux. Most of the GasEx-2001 experiments involved measurements taken by and around a drifting array of near-surface instruments deployed at 3.00S, 125.00W at 2335 UTC February 14, 2001. The GasEx array was allowed to drift for approximately 14 days until 0800 UTC March 1, 2001. Over this time period, the array drifted approximately 731 km to 2.30S, 131.54W. [4] Three specific studies were conducted as a part of the GasEx-2001 water column program Figure 1 ; . First, regional surveys of the study area were conducted at the beginning and middle of the study period to examine the spatial variability around the array. Second, casts were made near the GasEx array at noon local time 2000 UTC ; each day to examine the temporal evolution of the water column hydrography and carbon distributions over the course of the experiment. Third, two intensive time series studies were conducted with casts every 3 hours to examine diurnal variations in the water column. These studies were used to characterize the spatial and temporal evolution of the ocean system over the course of the experiment. This work will primarily focus on the second of these studies, the daily noon casts, in an attempt to derive a mean gas exchange value for the study based on a mixed layer carbon budget. The large-scale physical oceanographic setting and temporal evolution of the hydrographic conditions related to this study are described by Johnson et al. [2004], so this work will primarily discuss the geochemical signatures and variations in the mixed layer. Although a number of other studies have examined carbon budgets in the equatorial Pacific waters or used mixed layer pCO2 measurements together with published gas exchange parameterizations to derive CO2 fluxes, these studies were not conducted in conjunction with the direct flux measurement approaches available as part of this study. The variety of measurements made on the GasEx cruise provide a unique opportunity to directly evaluate the CO2 flux estimates based on both air-side and water-side measurements. [5] Changes in mixed layer dissolved inorganic carbon DIC ; concentrations are a function of air-sea gas exchange, biological uptake respiration, and horizontal and vertical mixing processes. Chipman et al. [1993] studied DIC distributions in a warm core eddy from the North Atlantic in 1990 and found that biological utilization of carbon and. Azinphos-methyl risk management decision - epa has accepted voluntary measures to reduce risks posed by azinphos-methyl to children, to agricultural workers, and to the environment. Gasex 2010Remotely sensed to determine regional and global airsea CO2 fluxes. The Southern Ocean Gas Exchange Experiment SO GasEx ; is being conducted in 2008 in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. Shipboard studies include physical, chemical, biological, and meteorological measurements. Analyses of the data collected during the field campaigns will continue through 2008 and 2009. Atmosphere Atmospheric Monitoring. Measurements of radiative trace species including CO2 and methane ; , started six years ago at Summit, Greenland, will continue, and measurements will be expanded to include tracers of carbon sources e.g., hydrofluorocarbons ; with new instrumentation. Weekly carbon cycle flask measurements will continue across Arctic areas in Canada, Norway, Iceland, Finland, the North Atlantic, and Alaska. A collaborative effort of U.S. agencies in the Yukon will install instrumentation for continuous vertical sampling within a 300-m boundary layer. Aircraft sampling for carbon cycle gases will be expanded to sites in Saskatchewan, Canada and Poker Flats, Alaska. Where possible, aircraft sampling will be added over Churchill on Hudson Bay, Manitoba, and several other sites. International cooperation continues with Russia at the Baseline Observatory on the central Siberian Arctic Ocean coast where carbon gas measurements will be conducted, particularly the measurements of methane that could be released from wetlands as the northern high latitudes continue to warm. In the Antarctic, flask gas sampling will continue at the South Pole Station, and at Halley, Syowa, and Palmer on the Antarctic coast. Carbon flask sampling will continue across the Drake Passage and around Antarctica on the support ship from Ushuaia to Palmer and the annual Chinese cruise, respectively. The Ice in Clouds Experiment. The Ice in Clouds Experiment ICE ; took place in November 2007, and data analysis and interpretation are ongoing. The goal of this study is to improve understanding of ice nucleation in the atmosphere. This knowledge will improve the modeling of ice cloud formation, precipitation, and climate effects. The specific objective of ICE is to show that under given conditions, direct measurements of the thermodynamic and kinetic environments of clouds temperature, humidity, wind ; and specific measurable characteristics of the aerosol, including chemical composition, can be used to predict the number of tiny ice particles that are initially seeded by existing atmospheric particles. ICE used airborne measurements of clouds along with coordinating ground measurements in mountainous locations such as the Front Range of Colorado and Wyoming. Close collaboration between theory, field, lab, and modeling studies are emphasized and ongoing. Application of the ARM Mobile Facility to Study the Aerosol Indirect Effects in China. China has exceptionally high aerosol loading with diverse properties whose influence has been detected across the Pacific Rim. Because of the rapid pace of changes in the atmospheric environment over China, it provides a natural test bed for identifying and quantifying the climatic effects of aerosols. Preliminary analyses of multiple satellite data sets MODIS and the TRMM Tropical Microwave Imager ; indicate more complex and unique aerosol indirect effects than are found in relatively cleaner environments. Unfortunately, China is one of the least observed regions, especially in terms of aerosol and cloud properties. To this end, the U.S. Department of Energy's DOE ; ARM Mobile Facility AMF ; is being deployed from 1 January to 31 December 2008 to investigate 1 ; the mechanisms of the aerosol indirect effects in the region and the roles of. Partial pressure of CO2, p CO2 ; . At the site of STMW formation, airto-sea CO2 fluxes typically range from 5 to 10 mmol CO2 m22 d21 refs 15, 22 ; during winter time. If we assume a typical mixed layer thickness of , 400 m at the site of STMW formation4, 7, variability in the airsea CO2 flux has the potential to change the SCO2 content of STMW by , 12 mmol kg21 each winter. These estimates are consistent with the observed changes in STMW SCO2 and C gasex from 1988 to 2001. There has been a slight increase in mean winter JanuaryMarch ; daily wind speed , 0.03 0.04 m s21 yr21; r 2 0.10 ; since 1980 in the STMW formation region, potentially equivalent to an increase in STMW SCO 2 of , 0.06 0.08 mmol kg21 yr21. There are insufficient data to evaluate whether seawater p CO2 conditions22 have changed over time at the site of STMW formation see Fig. 2b legend ; , but given the large variability in physical conditions at these sites, such changes appear very likely. The fate of the non-anthropogenic atmospheric CO2 in STMW that is, either eventual release to the atmosphere or transport to the ocean interior ; may be linked to interannual variability of STMW formation and changes in NAO state. Extensive STMW formation, as far south as Bermuda, occurred during numerous winters in the 1960s and 1970s, and lastly in 1985 and 1987 Fig. 2b, c ; , typically coinciding with NAO negative phases4, 7, 10. However, since 1987, winter STMW formation has been limited, coinciding with a predominantly NAO positive phase4, 7, 10. Winter mixing near Bermuda has been generally weak , 200 m deep ; , and not deep enough to entrain SCO2 from the STMW layer into the mixed layer at BATS Fig. 2b ; . Analyses of the vertical temperature gradients within STMW7 that is, dT dz STMW ; also indicate that the STMW has not formed near Bermuda and that the STMW layer at BATS has not been ventilated recently Fig. 2c ; , in agreement with our finding of a small increase in the C bio component in the absence of a change in biological export. During this period of relatively weak winter mixing, atmospheric CO2 is retained and trapped in the STMW layer. As STMW is transported to the western boundary current, water parcels cool and sink to deeper depths in "cooling spirals"23, 24, and CO2 is thereby transferred to deeper depths, constituting a potential long-term sink of CO2 .10 yr ; . In contrast, during periods of extensive deep winter mixing .300350 m deep, before 1988, and primarily associated with NAO negative phases 4, 7, 10 ; , mixing entrains water from the STMW layer and `liberates' atmospheric CO2 from STMW. We estimate that at least two-thirds of the STMW CO2 accumulation would be redistributed to seasonal thermocline waters overlying the STMW layer see Methods ; . If this model is correct, atmospheric CO2 absorbed during STMW formation is only stored for short periods in STMW, thereby constituting a short-term sink of CO2 , 3 yr ; . The relatively short observation period makes it difficult to demonstrate the proposed links between STMW variability, NAO changes and fate of CO2 within STMW. This is further complicated by the time delay of about 34 yr ref. 11 ; between the time of STMW formation and the arrival of this signal near Bermuda. The increase in C gasex implies a significant and recent change in the role of mode waters as an oceanic sink for atmospheric CO2. Given current estimates about the volume of the North Atlantic STMW 1, 672 103 km3; ref. 10 ; , rates of STMW formation 5 to 23 Sv; 1 Sv 106 m3 s21 ; and residence times5, 2529, and the CO2 increase that is, dCgasex dt dCbio dt 1: 6 mmol kg21 yr21 ; , we estimate that , 0.42.8 Pg C or 0.020.24 Pg C yr21 ; has accumulated in the subtropical gyre of the North Atlantic over the past 13 yr see Methods and Supplementary Information ; . This accumulation of atmospheric CO2 in STMW, in excess of the rate of equilibration of anthropogenic CO2, represents an extra oceanic sink of CO2 that is 310% of the average global uptake rate of CO2 , 2 Pg C yr21 ; 3 for the 19882001 period. In earlier decades, such as the 1970s and 1980s, extensive STMW ventilation of STMW across the gyre should have regularly `liberated' a considerable amount of CO2 trapped in the STMW layer, thereby reducing the oceanic uptake of. 8212; all birth practitioners: the techniques you've perfected over months and years of practice are valuable lessons for others to learn and karela.
